Dress for Success

Dress for Success

With today's job market being so competitive, it is imperative that you are at the top of your game at all times. One of the easiest things that you can do is to dress for success. To do this you need to always be thinking about what you should wear before attending an event, work, or a company related event.

1. If you're going on a golf outing, you should still be well dressed. It is not the time to dress casually. I would suggest wearing khakis and a polo shirt. Be sure that your khakis and polo are not wrinkled.

2. Always be sure to ask if you aren't sure what the dress code is. You can always call the receptionist at a company to ask. Don't guess, because if you are under dressed that will send a negative impression to others. It is always better to be over dressed in a business situation.

3. For an interview always wear business professional. This means you wear a button up long sleeve shirt, dress pants, dress socks and shoes, a tie, and a suit. Make sure that you wear socks to match your shoes. Never wear regular socks. Also be sure to have everything buttoned up and make sure that your pants and shirt are clean and pressed.

4. For business casual wear a button up shirt with dress pants and shoes. You may also wear polo instead of the button shirt in some occasions. Again, be sure to check if you are unsure what is appropriate. Obviously wearing the polo makes more sense for a regular work day and for company events that don't entail clients. When clients are present you should at least wear business casual with a long sleeve button up shirt. In a lot of cases you will want to wear business professional.

5. After you have been working at a firm for a while you will know what you are expected to wear every day. Dress as well, if not better than your boss. Just because your co-workers are getting very casual with their dress, does not mean it is right for you to do it.

6. The most important thing to remember is to dress conservatively. Worry more about what is more appropriate for a business setting than what is more stylish to you. Stick to more neutral colors. It is ok to try to add a little style with you tie or for women, your blouse, but do not over do it, and know when it is appropriate. A black suit looks the best in most scenarios.

Good advice, I have always dressed in business attire for interviews even if it is for a casual workplace. Says a lot about your personal goals in life.
