Dressing up for Halloween at work can be a super fun experience that lightens up the workplace- or it can be a total embarrassing bust. Follow the simple dos and don'ts for dressing up for Halloween at work and you won't need to worry about making a huge mistake.

First of all, unless you work in a super casual atmosphere, don't go all-out. Keep overly sexy, overly political, or raunchy costume themes out of the workplace. Sure, you may think it's cute to show up at work in fishnets and a corset top, but your coworkers and your boss may not take such a liking to your Halloween wardrobe choice. If you are going to get into the Halloween spirit, stick to the basics, like a ghost, bride of Frankenstein, or some other generic costume, then put your personality into the costume to make it your own.

Don't be too super cutesy either. Unless you work at an elementary school or a daycare facility, there is no excuse to show up at work in an adult diaper with a huge rattle and a pacifier in your mouth. You'll just embarrass yourself and those around you if you look so adorable it's almost creepy. Plus, you'll be a huge distraction at work, which won't impress anyone.

So you can't go all-out, you can't be too cute, and you have to be generic. Well, what's the fun in that? Well, when it comes to Halloween and work, you don't want to be the fuddy duddy who didn't dress up at all, but you don't want to be the freak who got a pink slip the next day for their off-color costume, either. Why not find something kosher that everyone can appreciate? Paint your nails with festive colors with cute Halloween decals on them, or wear a light-up tie with a haunted house on the front. Wear Halloween socks or put a pin on your suit. But don't go too crazy with a wig or Halloween makeup, just doll it up a bit, and you should be fine.

Ask them and see what the policy is at your workplace regarding wearing Halloween costumes at work. Your boss can let you know what you can and cannot wear regarding Halloween costumes at work, so you don't show up Halloween day too overdressed. If nothing else, you can wear those goofy nose and mustache glasses, and call it good.
