Dressing Up Your Old Clothes

Misty N.
There is new fad going around. People are so excited about being "green". Well, I think it is great that we have a fad that actually has a healthy effect on our planet. However, to tell you the truth, I don't reuse my old clothes to help the planet. I do it, because I'm broke and I want to squeeze every penny I can out of things. To help me in this endeavor, I have come up with some ways to save some of my old clothes and still look fashionable.

That Old Dress

My little girl is growing so fast it is hard to keep up. One day she is telling me she loves me, the next day she is telling me she loves the Jonas Brothers. Her body is growing just as fast as her personality. A lot of her dresses have become way too short. Instead of throwing them away, she wears the dress as a long shirt. We pair it with some skinny jeans, or leggings and a stylish pair of boots. The outcome is a stylish outfit that she can wear any place.

That Odd Skirt

I bought a skirt at a yard sale for a quarter. Yes, I love a good yard sale. How green of me. Anyhow, the skirt just didn't look right, as a skirt. However, it looked great as a shirt. This is the same principle as used with your old dresses. Now, this skirt had an elastic band at the top and went straight down. So, it looked great as a shirt when I tucked the bottom back in. However, you wouldn't want to try this with every type of skirt. Use your good head for fashion. If you don't have one, than borrow someone else's good fashion sense.

Stained Jeans

With jeans there are so many tricks you can use. One trick is to camouflage the stain by adding more decorations. This could be done with fabric paint, permanent marker, or whatever is handy. You can add pictures or just add blotches of color. Just be creative. If you are into the wholly jean look, you can just cut the stain out or fray it out. To fray out the spot, you need to make a precise incision into your pants. Than you need to remove unneeded threads, keeping the important ones intact.

Shirts Ugly or Small

Now, I'm not trying to call your shirt ugly, but maybe it just looks ugly on. Maybe your shirt isn't ugly at all. Maybe it is just too small. Well, there's strength in numbers. Some shirts look or fit badly when they are alone. However, if you pair a long shirt that maybe looks gross on top with a shirt that looks nice on top, but is too small, you get a good looking combination. The ugly shirt creates a long layer to cover what the good looking smaller shirt can't.

In the end, there are a lot of tricks to help you salvage some of your old clothes. The only way to discover these is to just try them out. Think outside the box and remember, if it looks good to you, than it works.

  • Got a stain, take it out the easy way. Cut it out. Holes can be fashionable.
  • Old dresses make fashionable shirts. Wear with skinny jeans and fashionable boots.
