With the way the job market is there have been many layoffs and cutbacks. Thousands of people have lost their jobs and are looking for new ones. Part of getting a new job is to keep trying. Not many places are hiring but there are still jobs out there. It can be frustrating to no get a call back but if you keep trying you will eventually find the job that's meant for you. When the call does come you will likely set up an interview appointment. An interview is when you go to the place you submitted your application to and speak with the director, or person hiring. They will ask you about your education, experience, and specific skills. The interview is what determines if you get the job or not. There are several things you both should and should not do during your interview. Here are ten tips to help you out.

1. The first tip that will help you to have a successful interview is to write down the date, time and location of the interview. If you are submitting applications know that employers will generally call you to set up an interview if they are interested in hiring you. It's a good idea to place a notepad and pen by the phone so that you are ready when the call arrives. Put the information in a place where you will see it often.

2. The second tip that will help you is to dress to impress. Potential employers want to see how you'll look on the job. If you are a lady applying for an office or sales position you'd want to wear a dress, skirt, or slacks. Something casual but professional looking and nice. If you are a man looking for a construction job you'll want to wear your steel toes and appear ready to work. If you are applying for an outdoor position you'll want to show up dressed in your outdoor winter wear.

3. The third tip that will help you is to arrive on time. I can guarantee an employer will question your dependability if you arrive late to your interview. Employers want employees who are on time constantly. The employer for sees you showing up to work late when you show up late to your interview. Calculate how long it will take you to get there. Make sure you know exactly where it is and which way to go the day before. Leave with ten to fifteen minutes to spare. Take your time and drive carefully, paying close attentions to signs and street names. This way you won't get lost. Being five to ten minutes early looks good too.

4. The fourth tip that will help you is to not wear a hat. Guys, take off your hats before entering the building in which the interview is held. It's just one of those things. No one wears hats at court, church, funerals, or interviews. It somehow is a sign of disrespect. Leave the hat in the car.

5. The fifth tip that will help you to have a successful interview is to greet your potential employer warmly and confidently. Extend your arm as an invitation to shake. Shake firmly. Smile and introduce yourself. Sometimes the potential employer will quickly greet you. If there is a pause and they do not make sure to do this, they are waiting for you to greet them and to tell them who you are and why you're there.

6. The sixth tip is to make eye contact. A person who won't make eye contact appears inconsistent, untrustworthy, intimidated, or nervous. You don't want to appear as any of these things! If you can't look your potential employer in the eyes you'll have a hard time working for him. When a person is not afraid to or hesitant on looking you in the eyes it shows they are paying attention to what your saying, and are interested.

7. The seventh tip that will help you is to be respectful. Use your manners, be polite, and never be rude. When you show respect to the potential employer they see that you are respectable. They know you'll respect other employees, your coworkers. This is very important. No one likes a person who is loud and obnoxious, or simply rude. This includes potential employers. Being respectful will go a long ways in helping you to have a successful interview.

8. The eighth tip that will help you is to come prepared. If you have a degree or a special license you should bring proof to the interview. Bring your drivers license and social security card along as well. A lot of information is needed for the hiring process. You don't want to be stuck asking if you can bring that proof in on another day because you forgot it.

9. The ninth tip that will help you is to be honest. Never over rate your skills. What if the employer believes you can do everything that you said you could when you really can't? You'll get there on the first day and be in way over your head. Be honest about everything from your skills to any problems with previous employers.

10. The tenth and final tip that will help you to have a successful interview is to relax. Just be yourself. If you appear stressed and uncomfortable the potential employer will wonder why. Relax your mind. If you are qualified for the position and have been called for an interview they are definitely interested. These tips will help you to land the job!
