Drew Brees on David Letterman to Help Letterman Cope

Robert Dougherty
Drew Brees went on David Letterman for the traditional post-Super Bowl talk show interview. But Drew Brees was on David Letterman to also face a rival fan. The Late Night host is a native from Indiana - which was made clear when he wore a Colts jersey in his own Super Bowl ad. But although Letterman is a Colts fan, he had to give props to the Saints' MVP for taking Peyton Manning down. With Drew Brees on David Letterman, it kicked off a whole new level of fame for the quarterback.

It had already been a whirlwind day for Brees, since he had finished his requisite Disney World appearance earlier, greeted rabid Saints fans, and got set for the team's victory parade tomorrow. But after winning any big sporting event, the star usually makes one or two late night interviews to talk about it.

Since Drew Brees was the undisputed star, he came on David Letterman on behalf of the new champions. Letterman paid homage earlier by wearing a tie in the Saints' colors and doing a Top 10 of excuses for the Colts' loss.

But although he was an opposition fan, he admitted that his disappointment was melted away when Brees celebrated with his young son. Since New Orleans is such a Cinderella story, even Colts fans were likely more bitter at Manning and their team's mistakes, rather than the Saints.

Drew Brees going on David Letterman was both the end to a long day, and the beginning of a very long offseason. Today is the Saints' victory parade, and after that comes months of other celebrations. Eventually, the Saints will return to the field to try and do this again next year, but first, they have a lot to be honored for.

In the case of Brees, this is the first time he will face such a wave of publicity. For all his stats, he had never come this close to winning it all before, and was just under the radar compared to the likes of Manning, Brady and Favre. Now he is at the top of the elite for the first time, after his near-perfect performance at the Super Bowl.

After disappointment and injury at San Diego, followed by his revival at New Orleans, Brees may be now be just as visible as Manning, Favre, and the other superstars of the NFL. An appearance on David Letterman is merely one of the lower perks, by comparison.

As for Letterman, having Brees on completed his own Super Bowl bump, after his party with Leno and Oprah overshadowed most of the Super Bowl ads. But given the state of his competition, he hardly needs any more boosts now.
