Drifts Within

April Higney
Tunneling through time,
back to when I was a young child,
like a dream, but way back then, a reality,
skinning knees, playing tag between trees,
picking a flower, a tiger-lily, growing wild and free.

Tunneling through time,
flash forward, not too far ahead, a happy lady,
like a reality, but a dream of coming days,
feeling the breeze, an easel set between the trees,
eyes upon the dancing flower, painting the musical sways.

Tunneling through time,
finding a caterpillar, then the changed butterfly,
quietly one struggles along the rough bark, as I play in the park,
tickling along my senses over my hand, as a child didn't quite understand,
the other flutters, dancing in the air, wanting to catch it, I try.

Tunneling through time,
flash forward, not too far ahead,
struggling along the rough bark, I see me in its place,
trying to understand better, the cycles, life changing,
fluttering through my heart, in these dreams I still chase.

Tunneling through time,
back to when I was young, to the future drifting in,
reflecting, collecting,
holding onto,
this person I am, within.
