Today, if our kids think about watching a movie chances are they are anticipating heading off to the nearest multiplex where they can take their choice of one of 15 movies playing in an enclosed and air-conditioned theater. For those of you who would like to take a journey back to those good old days of drive in theater, you still have the opportunity in Lafayette, Tennessee.
In this small town there is a local drive in, the Macon Drive In Theater, still up and running today. It offers the same quiet atmosphere you may remember from all those years ago, and clean family fun for all the guests that come in each summer. Nothing is like watching the kids down front playing football or Frisbee (yes, they still make Frisbees too) in the grassy area right under the big screen, or topping off a picnic supper with cokes, popcorn and candy from the concession stand.
If you don't feel like cooking, the concession stand offers everything from hot dogs to tenderloin sandwiches with french fries or tater tots to go with them. I know my son was sure impressed the first time we took him to this little drive in, and he figured out going out to watch a movie did not have to mean sitting completely still and silent in an uncomfortable chair for hours on end.
Another thing that we really enjoyed about this little drive in was the price. My husband, my son and I all gained admission for only thirteen dollars, and we chose to get our supper at the concession stand with sandwiches, fries, cokes, popcorn and candy for all three of us the grand total was less than twenty-five dollars there.
I was pleasantly surprised considering on our last trip to a conventional theater we had managed to spend forty dollars on the concession stand alone. You would think at this price you would be seeing old movies at the very least, but not here. They show new movies every week, and the movies premier there the same time they do at other theaters in the area.
If you are ever in the neighborhood and want a good clean night of family fun I would highly recommend you check out the Macon Drive In Theater. This little taste of history is sure to be a real treat for the entire family.
