Drive-Thru Review: Bandera Jalisco in San Antonio, Texas

NRMartin
Bandera Jalisco's orange-colored building is a bright spot on this rainy Saturday morning. On a clear day, the parking lot is strewn about with Mexican Pottery available for purchase. The scene reminds me of an outdoor market in Laredo and sets the stage for a perfect day of garage sale rummaging or craft fairing.

The parade of cars in the drive-thru lane suggested that this morning's breakfast would be extra enjoyable and I was right. I ordered a Carne Asada Taco and a Bean and Egg Taco. The asada was tender and flavorful, not over- salted like I've experienced in other restaurants. Apparently, when you order an Asada Taco, you are rewarded with a foiled bundle of lettuce and tomato in case you want to decorate your taco. Even though it is tasty enough on its own, I gave in to intrigue and topped the asada with two slices of fresh ripe tomato and crisp shredded lettuce, which I have to admit, was surprisingly complimentary.

The beans in my Bean and Egg taco were perfect in taste and texture. Harmoniously coupled with the best scrambled eggs I've eaten in quite a while- the pair proved to be especially delectable in Jalisco's homemade tortillas. The tortillas were not too thick, not too thin and better still, not covered with a layer of flour. I wish I had ordered two of these tacos.

I washed my food down with an ice-cold can of Coke only because I drank a can of Big Red yesterday. Indeed, no other beverages are acceptable with breakfast tacos or barbacoa for that matter. Interestingly enough, this place also sells bottled Coke if you prefer it.

All in all, I'd suggest Bandera Jalisco to everyone and I'm anxious to try other menu items. The price was right and the wait in the drive thru was well worth it for the quality and taste of the food. My only warning is that the bottom of the classic brown paper bag in which your food is served will be very greasy. But do not fear, that only means that the grease has evacuated your food by the time you get it home.
