Driving in the Dark

An Unnatural Act We Do Quite Naturally

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

While the sun is sleeping
But awake in the other hemisphere,
Engines power movement on paths
Lit by glowing incandescent globes
As we navigate our beings
From the place we call 'here'
To the ones all named 'there.'

Hands on a wheel
And foot on a pedal,
Eyes on the road
Rolling smoothly along
In a box of painted metal.
We hope to reach our destination
Without that final mishap resulting
In our ultimate culmination.

Surreal images
Of people not quite there
And buildings glowing from within
With eye-unfriendly glare;
Accompanied by some faith,
Just a tad of skill
And perhaps a dollop of knowing,
We roll along dark, lonesome streets
To get to where we are going.

And hopefully we get there in one piece.

I've never enjoyed driving at night, especially if it's raining. It's hard enough just trying to stay awake, but with all the glare from rain that hides the lines and markers in a road, it feels downright dangerous.

Why do I think this outstanding poem really isn't about cars...? Well done, thanks!

Driving (and flying) at night adds an extra tension to the trip.

I loved what Bill said, yes turn on the lights! LOL. Seriously though, my wife and mother-in-law have night vision problems but for me, I prefer driving at night. Like Karen said, less traffic.

There is something so alluring about a night drive and so potentially deadly! Your words and phrases illuminated it very well.
