Driving the Southern Pacific Coast Highway

Looking for an enjoyable road trip? Then look no further then the Pacific Coast Highway (known to the locals as the PCH) in Southern California. This 658 mile stretch of roadway can be started in the north and driven south or vice versa, but we will be exploring the southern stretch only. So grab your family, a picnic lunch, your bathing suits, and fill up the gas tank as we explore a few of the areas that you and your family can visit and see along the way.

The southern end of the Pacific Coast Highway starts in San Diego and ends 70 miles north of Los Angeles, leaving miles and miles of the road, beginning to ending point to discover. Does the PCH always travel along the coast? The answer to that question is no. There are many spots where it travels away from the coast, but don't fret, it will come right back out to the coast shortly.

If your looking for swimming beaches, some of the best can be found in Newport Beach, but if you're looking for some of the best snorkeling and diving then you need to try Laguna Beach. If fashion is your forte, then head for Fashion Island. This little Island is known as the Rodeo Drive of Orange County, the streets are lined with shops that carry everything you could want and more.

Don't be surprised if as you're driving along you see sea lion's sunbathing, rare water birds, a school of dolphins out frolicking in the water, or even turtles up on the shoreline. Traveling along the coast will find you driving around or through The San Bernadino mountain range, quaint roadside shops, oil country, and many Military bases. You will see Pepperdine University in Malibu, Catalina Island, as well as the very famous Venice Beach. Caution at Venice Beach as you may want to stop the car and get out to do some sight-seeing as many artists frequent this area, making you temped to buy some beautiful masterpiece.

While your out enjoying your trip, make sure you and the kids enjoy an outing on the world famous Santa Monica Pier. The whole family can find something to do here, from riding rides, to fishing, or just wandering around checking out the scenery.

So pack the car, gather the family, and head out for a fun filled day trip that everyone can enjoy.
