Dropout

Oh gosh, Jacob thought. Yet another day at school. I swear, I hate that place.

Jacob was what one would call a "chronic slacker". He payed no attention to his schoolwork and substituted his homework time with his guitar.

"Jacob," called his father, Ron. "You don't want to be late for school. We need to be in the car in five minutes."
Yes, I'd rather be late for school, Jacob thought. "Okay, coming dad!"

Ron pulls up to the school.
"You have a good day, Jacob. And work on bringing your grades up today instead of bringing them down. You can't afford to skip any more classes."
He gives Jacob a hug as Jacob got out.

Jacob's best friend, Richard, runs up to him as Ron pulls out of the parking lot.
"Hey Jake, want to skip school and go play? I got a new amp from a friend for a hundred. Fender, too."
"Nice. Sure, let's go."

They spent the whole day jamming at Richard's house, making sure to leave in time for Jacob's dad to pick him up from school when the bell rang.

...

"Mr. Bostner, has Jacob been sick recently," the school secretary asked. "He hasn't been at school recently."
"Well yeah, he has! I've been giving rides to school every day. In fact, he gets there early."
"When our attendance records said he's been gone for two weeks now, we checked with his teachers to make sure it wasn't a mistake. Also, a boy named Richard has been gone since the same day as Jacob--apparently they're close friends."
"Yeah, I know Richard. Alright, I'll look into it. Thank you."
"Thank you, Mr. Bostner."

Alright! Yet another day to go jam. Man, I love this!
As they were driving to school, Ron spoke.
"Jacob, you've been doing really good recently in being ready for school. I'm glad to see you're taking your schoolwork seriously.
Jacob said nothing.

Ron pulls up to the school, gives his son a hug, and leaves.

Richard sneaks out from behind another car as Ron turned the corner.

"Let's go!"
They go to Richard's car and pull out. As they're pulling out of the parking lot, a silver BMW pulls out right in from of them and stops.
"Holy crap, that's my dad!"
Ron got out of the car and walked to the passenger's side.
Jacob, just what the hell do you think you're doing?"
"I'm sick of school, Dad. I'm done. I want to play music and be in a band. You know that."
You need school, Jacob. If not, you'll end up being a waiter or delivery boy or some crap job like that."
"I'm gonna make it big, Dad..."

Jacob ended up being in a local band for quite a few years, but then they fell apart. He became a waiter and a delivery man for several places because he couldn't hold a job. He eventually started his own business two years before he died of a brain tumor, and left his wife and two children in debt.

But at least he got what he wanted...
