Drought Resistant Flowers: Blanketflower, Dakota Vervain, and the Hedge Rose
Flowers that Grow in Spite of Drought Conditions
Three drought-resistant flowers you can plant and enjoy in your home landscaped lawn include the hedge rose, the blanketflower and the Dakota vervain.
Drought Resistant Flower #1: Hedge Rose (Rosa rugosa)
Roses are a finicky flower, requiring consistent care in addition to the proper soil and water regimen. But for those living in drought-type environments, growing roses seems like an impossible dream. Yet there is one rose type, the hedge rose--officially called the Rosa rugosa--that can flourish in spite of drought conditions in your lawn landscape.
This rose can grow in poor soil, sandy or salty soils and in the shade or full sun. It is low-maintenance at its best. And if you live in a drought environment, you don't even have to worry about the one concern that plagues growing this rose: keeping the soil well drained.
This flower produces large blooms in early summer and up until frost it will continue to provide at least sporadic blooms. Inevitably, red rose hips the size of cherry tomatoes will appear too. In the fall it goes from yellow, to orange to red, in color. And it will also produce a sweet fragrance that can travel up to several yards in distance.
Drought Resistant Flower #2: Blanketflower (Asteraceae)
Brilliant red flowers known as blanketflower are trimmed in vivid yellow and bloom between May and September, even in drought environments. This flower is one of the most adaptable perennials.
Blanketflowers are at home by roadsides, in drainage ditch slope areas and open fields. But they will even live between six to ten days as a cut flower too.
The colorful flower can grow up to 2 feet tall, and it is easily established from seed. If you are able to keep the blanketflower watered, you can extend the life of its blooms even more.
Drought Resistant Flower #3: Dakota Vervain (Verbena bipinnatifida)
Dakota Vervain is a perennial flower suited for planting in landscape areas plagued by drought conditions too. This flower can produce lavender, pink, or purple blooms slightly less than 1 inch in diameter. It blooms from March until October, offering a long period of colorful beauty for the drought-conditioned area.
Butterflies and insects are drawn to these flowers that can grow as small as 6 inches--or as much as 18 inches--in height. And the flowers aren't opposed to growing in sandy soils either.
