Drought Tolerate Herbs

Deborah Anderson
Drought tolerant herbs can be a welcome addition to several gardens. These gardens are ones that are generally in full sun, have soil that drains well and, of course, these gardens are ones that do not receive very much water or moisture. Not all herbs would do well in these type of situations, but there are several herbs that are important to many various recipes that can be planted in these type of gardens. These drought tolerant herbs, which most have woody stems, are Epazote, Oregano, Rosemary, Garden Sage, Winter and Summer Savory and Thyme.

Before deciding on which herbs to plant in a drought tolerant garden, it is important to prepare the soil for the herbs. Loosen the soil in the desired area. Loose soil that is friable will help the herbs to develop root systems that are good and will help the drought tolerant herbs to minimize the moisture that they need to survive and grow. Strong, healthy root systems are important to drought tolerant herbs because they do not absorb a lot of their moisture through their leaves, the majority of moisture that these herbs get is absorbed through their root systems. After loosing the soil, add organic matter in the form of compost or compost manure. Adding organic matter will help the soil stay loose, be more porous and will eventually help the roots spread out and access more moisture. More moisture is available to the root system of drought tolerant herbs when organic matter is added to the soil because the organic matter allows the water actually seep into the area where the herbs roots are located instead of puddling up on top of the soil and/or running off of the soil and not being used by the herb at all.

Epazote is a drought tolerant herb that is used to season Mexican food dishes such as beans, salsas, soups and quesadillas.

Oregano is a drought tolerant herb that is used to season Greek, Middle Eastern and Italian dishes such as sauces and chicken dishes.

Rosemary is a drought tolerant herb that is used to season bread, potatoes, meat, seafood, salad dressings and marinades.

Garden Sage is a drought tolerant herb that is used to season Italian dishes, Mediterranean dishes and of course, most Thanksgiving turkey and dressing dishes.

Summer and Winter Savory are drought tolerant herbs that are used to season German and Mediterranean dishes.

Thyme is a drought tolerant herb that is used to season Cajun and Creole dishes including poultry dishes as well as soups and sauces.
