Drug Usage

Eric Cooper
The use of drugs can begin for many different reasons: to end depression, remove one's problems, or because it is considered cool. However, the reality is that drugs are very dangerous and harmful, and they can be even fatal. Before any one starts using drugs, he must consider the consequences.

Inhalants (cigarettes) have a great effect on the people around the smoker, and have even been traced as the cause of nonsmoker's deaths. Studies have shown that when a smoking ban is passed in a large area, the heart attack and lung cancer counts decrease drastically. Inhalants also drastically affect the smoker's personal health. Have you ever heard a smoker's nagging cough? That is a descriptive characteristic of smokers and is accurately called, "The smoker's cough." The smoker's cough is caused by the tar from the inhaled smoke. It gets stuck in the lungs and esophagus, and this cough is the body's effort to remove the tar. Because of all of this coughing, the diaphragm gets really tired, worn out, and weak. Eventually it gets tired of coughing, and causes serious health problems. Another problem caused by smoking, and perhaps the most well known is lung cancer. In simple terms, lung cancer is caused by all of the toxins that are inhaled. The Surgeon General's warning on the back of the cigarette case gives several health risks about smoking.

Alcohol drinking also does not just affect the drinker. When one drives after drinking, his vision and response time are impaired, and puts him and others in great danger. In recent studies, alcohol is blamed as the number one cause of death in the United States of America, second to only heart disease, which can be attributed to the use of alcohol. Like the inhalants, alcohol greatly affects the drinker's health. It causes excessive liver damage, brain damage, and if taken too much at one time, it can even cause death.

In conclusion, drugs are not the cool kinds of things, and they will not provide the promised fun and happiness that they are made out to do either. They as an answer to depression or just to escape one's problems, but when their affects wear off, you are worse off than what you were when you first took them. The real answer to depression is found only in the love of God. He offers to bring true joy and happiness in a close relationship with Him. All you have to do is take Him at His Word. He says in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." That means, that if any one, it does not matter if you have already fallen into Satan's snare of drug addiction, God will still forgive, if you take Him at His Word. All you have to do is believe that God sent His only begotten son, Jesus, to die for your sins, and that He rose from the dead. You can live in Heaven forever. Some people will say that you need to work to get to heaven, but that is not true. In Ephesians 2:8-9 the Bible says, "For by grace are ye saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast."
