Drug-Related Paranoia Likely Fueling Randy Quaid Behavior - Randy to Evi: Til Mental Do Us Part?

Randy Quaid Behavior Mirrors His Wife Evi's, Which Helps Rule Out Mental Illness Attacking Them Both Simultaneously

Paranoia is a symptom experienced by some drug users. Drugs can provoke the same type of bizarre behavior seen in the mentally ill community when there are psychotic breaks with reality, but with one difference: drug-motivated paranoia can go away if the individual stops using their drug of choice.

Randy Quaid and his wife Evi appear to be suffering from paranoia fueled by drugs. Their most recent arrest this week in Canada is replete with talk of murderers in Hollywood and "set ups."

You could make the case that Randy Quaid is perhaps becoming mentally unbalanced. That would explain the odd comments and behavior exhibited since 2009 of Chevy Chase's brother-in-law in National Lampoon's "Vacation."

You could also make the same case for his wife Evi.

But it would be almost a statistical impossibility for them both to become mentally unbalanced and psychotic (with paranoid tendencies) at the same time, without the aid of drugs.

How many husband/wife duos do you know that become mentally ill in the same year, at the same time? None? Me either.

If Randy and Evi are using drugs, however, then they can both develop the bizarre personalities they seem to be exhibiting simultaneously. Of course acting could explain it, too, especially if they want to avoid some serious jail time for their--count 'em--third arrest in a year.

But Randy Quaid doesn't appear to be acting any more than he did in the aforementioned movie; Randy seems to have taken acting roles that are the real him, actually.

Methamphetamine use could be causing their paranoia. Ecstasy could cause their paranoia, too, as can that drug everyone in California is claiming is harmless: marijuana.

For additional drugs that can cause the paranoia condition, see the list at Wrong Diagnosis. It isn't totally complete, as other illegal drugs can also bring about this condition.

Is drug-related paranoia fueling Randy Quaid and wife Evi's behavior in Canada? It would appear so, since Randy was coherent enough later to tell the Canadians this about their country after his arrest, "It has been a very welcoming nation to me. I would not do anything to besmirch my reputation." And Randy's wife Evi sounded like an addict who knew she would need her fix (and couldn't get it in jail) when CBC News said she stated that "continued detention could seriously endanger her health."
