Didn't even know dry, itchy, irritated eyes had a season, did you? Yep, as the temperature goes down outside and we reach for the thermostat inside, many will experience a common annoyance associated with the dry air of winter - dry eyes. Millions of Americans suffer from dry eyes, which are marked by a burning, itchy sensation caused by inadequate tear film. Although it can be related to other health problems, many suffer due to a number of preventable environmental factors.
To learn about some common causes and simple treatments for dry eyes, RedPlum talked with Dr. Robert Abel, Jr., founder and Medical Director of the Medical Eye Bank of Delaware and the author of several books, including "The Eye Care Revolution. If you suffer from dry eyes, Dr. Abel recommends taking the following steps for relief:
1. Get an eye exam. First things first - Dr. Abel recommends getting an eye exam to rule out any pathological reason for dry eyes. A check up will also rule out a need for a new eyeglass prescription, which is an important check because eye strain symptoms often mimic dry eye.
2. Get some immediate relief. Use artificial tears, which will help to coat the eye. Dr. Abel recommends trying a few to find a perfect match, as some contain preservatives which can cause allergies. "Try a drop in one eye first to see if you notice itchiness or redness before committing to further use", he suggests. A preservative-free ointment at bedtime is also helpful in reducing dry eye symptoms. Punctal plugs can also provide relief. These removable plugs will help to build up tears in those who are deficient.
3. Figure out what's causing it. Mold, dust and dry air all contribute to dry eyes. "Pay attention to when you notice dry eyes - perhaps it's when you first get up in the morning, after being on the computer for long periods of time, while reading or while driving", says Dr. Abel. Place a humidifier in your bedroom or office. Clean the vents in your home prior to heating season, when you'll be making use of them often. And remember to blink! "Blinking completely and often will help to recoat your eyes with a tear film. When we're doing concentrated tasks, like working on a computer or driving, we often forget this simple step", he says.
4. Check your medications. Look carefully at medications, which may be dehydrating you. Assess the use of natural remedies with your doctor.
5. Maintain a healthy diet. Eliminate artificial sweeteners which, in addition to contributing to obesity, can contribute to dry eyes. Stay hydrated by drinking water. Include fish, spinach and other green leafy vegetables and flaxseed in your diet.
6. Take supplements. "Supplements can help to improve the effects of dry eyes, as well as yield many other benefits", says Dr. Abel. He suggests taking supplements including Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, flax and DHA. He specifically recommends each of the following brands and products: Carlson, Nordic Naturals, Krill Oil, Abel Eyes and Right for the Macula.
