Dry, Frizzy Hair? - Moisture Intolerance Can Be Helped

Six Tips to Overcome the Evils of Dry Hair

Johnathan Q. Moriarty
The last straw for me was when I was in the shower with my hair soaking wet and it was still frizzing and flying away on me. How the heck is that even possible?! The fury and anger boiled my blood as I was bound and determined to figure out what in the world I could do about my dry, frizzy hair. I had tried so many different kinds of conditioners that I was to the point of tears. It seemed every girl I passed had bouncing, moisturized locks of shiny perfection while I got stuck with a loose pile of dull and dreary split-ends that was ready to catch on fire any second.

I tried several things - expensive French products, assortments of oils, mayonnaise, eggs, vinegar, Pantene, and the list goes on. I became depressed and ashamed of my non-shiny non-brilliant hair.

Here is what definitely did NOT work for me:

1. Kerastase conditioner from Meijer. - This came in a really cool bottle with words that made no sense (I guess they were French or something). But, c'est le vie, it worked no magic for moi.

2. Pantene anything - I kept hoping it would work. It didn't.

3. Vinegar rinses - this just smelled funny.

4. Mayonnaise - bad bad idea. Don't ask. Desperate people do desperate things.

When I was finally almost to the point of giving up, I found some things that worked.

Here is what I found that actually DID work for me:

1. Condition - Shampoo - Condition method

This is where you condition before shampooing, shampoo, then condition again. I don't do this all the time because I'm usually in a hurry, but it does seem to help once or twice a week.

2. Don't shampoo everyday.

This might sound weird to some, but I learned that my hair doesn't make much natural oil, so I need to let it keep the little it does make by not washing it out too often. Every other day works well for me.

3. Weekly hot oil treatment.

This really does help, because part of the problem with dry hair is the lack of oil being distributed over the follicles. You need to be careful not to use too much oil because then it will leave your hair a sticky gross mess. Less than half a teaspoon is more than enough for waist length hair. I probably use even less than that. You can heat the oil in the microwave (just a few seconds) and massage it through your hair, then pile on top of your head under a shower cap. Wrap a towel around that to keep the heat in helps too.

4. Neutrogena!

I love Neutrogena products with all my heart. The two particular hair products that have really helped me are Neutrogena Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner and Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask. The hair mask is the closest thing I could find to whatever the heck awesome conditioner comes in hair dye boxes.

5. Back to Basics!

Ok, I was skeptical at first. I'm thinking, my salon is just trying to hawk some random products and make a few extra bucks. But in desperation, I tried their Raspberry Almond shampoo for damaged hair, and it was amazing! They were out of the conditioner at the time, but I will definitely be back for it too. What really surprised me was that the shampoo left my hair feeling like I already conditioned it.

6. Cycle your hair products.

I've noticed that I need to switch to a different brand conditioner around every six months. I don't know why this is, but even if I'm just switching back and forth between the same two conditioners, it really seems to help my annoying hair be less ... annoying.

Well, I hope this may have found and helped another girl down on her luck with moisture-intolerant hair! Hope is out there!

Wash and condition hair. When you put the conditioner in, leave it in for twice the amount of time recommended on label. Rinse it out . Next, divide wet hair into four sections ,hold apart with barrettes or bobby pins. apply a small amount of conditioner and comb from roots to ends. Comb with a wide tooth comb and start at the ends or bottom (hair should still be wet, never do this dry). Twist hair into a ball with a booby pin holding it into position. Leave conditioner in do not rinse out. Later when you remove pin hair should be manageble and surprisingly soft. Good Luck.
