The DSTL1 Android phone measures 4.4 by 2.1 by 0.6 inches, nearly the size of a Motorola Droid but does not have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, therefore you have to use the Android keyboard to type. However the keyboard is very small hence cumbersome to use in either landscape or portrait orientation. The screen is placed some millimeters deep in its clear plastic shell. The touchscreen does not respond immediately and accurately while customizing or selecting an application.
However,DSTL1 Android phone only runs on 2G or 2.5 network, it does not support 3G and this is a major limitation. On using this phone you will realize that while surfing the net, it loads pages very slowly in comparison to a 3G supported phone. Nonetheless, the phone benefits from Goggles Android OS clear-cut and spontaneous interface. It has twenty already loaded applications like, FM radio, contacts, shortcuts, games widgets among others and can install shortcuts to any of the application by simply pressing and holding the icon.
The test messaging service is well organized. After typing a message, you can choose which Sim card to use to send your test. Another good aspect of this phone is that importing contacts from anywhere else is quite easy, because the Android address book uses a tabular design which makes the job of looking for and accessing contact details effortless. When you click on a contact, the application displays all the means of contacting the person be it phone,IM ,email or any other. It is also very simple to know who called you, sent you a message and on which Sim card. All you have to do is click one of the tabs at the top of the phones screen, the same way you get to see the contacts you have dialed or received calls from recently.
The music player in Android 1.5 is good but the headphones cannot be plugged. You cannot fit them directly into the DSTL1 because it has no 3.5mm jack, instead they plug into a clip-on voice microphone which in turn plugs into the USB port on the phone. This is rather cumbersome, it would have been better plugged directly to the phone. The DSTL1 Android phone has an inbuilt Sony camera of 5-mega-pixel with a variety of features like, facial recognition, auto focus, choice of picture sizes, among others. Despite its shortcoming, I believe the DSTL1 is a very good phone to have.
