Duffy : "Rockferry" Review
23 Year Old Welsh Singer is More Reminisant of Brenda Lee Than Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse's instant classic smash hit album Back to Black was released on March 13, 2007. A little over a year later a new British soul diva is named Duffy released her debut record Rockferry. While there are those who have been quick to pass Duffy off as simply a Winehouse clone, that is clearly not the case. Of course, there are the obvious comparisons between the two singers. Duffy's music is more Rhythm, while Winehouse is more blues. There for both records are worth listening to and both artists are legitimate in their own way.
Most of the songs on Rockferry have a 'wall-of-soundish' feel to them, meaning that one could easily have seen The Ronnettes or The Crystals recording these tracks in the early 1960's. The stand outs of the record are the title track "Rockferry", the albums first hit single "Mercy", the new single "Warwick Avenue", and the final song on the album "Distant Dreamer". With these tracks, as with the rest of the album, it is clear that Duffy has it in her to be a musical force to be reckoned with for the long run. That of course is another way in which she can be compared to Amy Winehouse.
"Mercy " the American debut single off of Rockferry, is presently getting a great amount of radio airplay and is also one MTV's top videos. This is yet another example of how young people are often not give the credit that they deserve. What is meant by that is that so many musical artists are shaped and molded into an image that is thought to be of appeal to people between the ages of 12 to 24. But what sometimes happens is that a really talent, like Duffy, comes along. She makes good music and all people like it, period. Duffy's music transcends generational barriers and can be enjoyed by anyone. This is not to say that music that can be enjoyed by just one age group doesn't serve a purpose, because it does. But when a good artist makes a good record, as is the case with Rockferry, that too serves a purpose. It's something for everyone, not just a selected segment of society.
