Dumb and Stupid Laws in Alabama

Janet Trieschman
Dumbness and stupidity can be found at the highest levels of our society. The law is not exempt from examples of stupidity. And it is found far and wide across our country in each and every state. All states have weird and dumb laws on the books. It is often more time consuming and costly to have them removed, so there they sit. They usually aren't acted upon but they are legal and binding and can be enacted upon if an officer of the law wanted to do so. Some are actually new and have been used recently. How strange are Alabama's weird laws? Here are the top five strangest laws in Alabama. These are listed here in descending order for your entertainment. It is hoped that you would not use them to enact a citizen's arrest! Talk about dumb and stupid!

Number 5
Women are able to retain all property they owned prior to marriage in the case of divorce. However, this provision does not apply to men. I don't see why this is dumb or stupid. Makes total sense to me!

Number 4
Incestuous marriages are legal.
This is unbelievable, weird and strange. I don't even want to imagine the offspring that could occur, not to mention if this happened for a few generations!

Number 3
It is illegal to maim oneself to escape duty.
Can serving be that bad? Is it worth maiming or mutilating yourself? I thought it was honorable to serve.

Number 2
You may not have an ice cream cone in your back pocket at any time. I don't understand. If I want one in my pocket I should be able to have it. Then again, I am not sure why I would want an ice cream cone in my back pocket! It does add a new level to catching the drips!

Number 1
Boogers may not be flicked into the wind.
Again, this makes total sense to me. It's kind of a duh moment. But I am not sure you need to pass a law about it. Try it once and you will not try it again!

Bonus:
A bunch of religious laws:
It is illegal to impersonate a person of the clergy.
It is illegal to wear a fake moustache that causes laughter in church.
In Auburn: No person may spit on the floor of a church.

This is a great and funny series of articles. The law can be strange, can't it, sometimes?
