Dumb and Stupid Laws in Indiana

Janet Trieschman
Dumbness and stupidity can be found at the highest levels of our society. The law is not exempt from examples of stupidity. And it is found far and wide across our country in each and every state. All states have weird and dumb laws on the books. It is often more time consuming and costly to have them removed, so there they sit. They usually aren't acted upon but they are legal and binding and can be enacted upon if an officer of the law wanted to do so. Some are actually new and have been used recently. How strange are Indiana's weird laws? Here are the top five strangest laws in Indiana. These are listed here in descending order for your entertainment. It is hoped that you would not use them to enact a citizen's arrest! Talk about dumb and stupid!

Number 5
Waitresses may not carry drinks into a restaurant or bar.
What? So no one can drink anything in a restaurant? Or is it self-serve? Or is there a drink bringer? Does this even make sense? Or am I reading it wrong.

Number 4
Hotel sheets must be exactly 99 inches long and 81 inches wide.
When was the last time you measured your sheets? How about the bed? I wonder if the sheets that are exactly 99 inches long and 81 inches wide actually fit a bed? Moreover, who had reason to measure them in the first place?

Number 3
A man over the age of 18 may be arrested for statutory rape if the passenger in his car is not wearing her socks and shoes, and is under the age of 17.
No, don't show me your feet -- it's illegal for me to see them, at least while I'm driving or in the car.

Number 2
Anyone 14 or older who profanely curses, damns or swears by the name of God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Ghost, shall be fined one to three dollars for each offense, with a maximum fine of ten dollars per day.
Sometimes enacting upon these laws might not be such a bad thing! I wonder if the money collected goes to the local churches?

Number 1
Baths may not be taken between the months of October and March.
So this is why everyone flees to Florida for the winter months. Those snowbirds actually have good reason to flee. Silly me, I thought it was the cold snowy weather!

Indiana DID have a Statutory Rape Law...but a few years ago it was consolidated with the Child Molestation statutes, which honestly are more onerous since it was bad enough to call it "rape" when it was only an offense of age difference but now if an 18 year old has sex with a 15 year old, he's lumped in with pedophiles and truly dangerous people.

You're reading it wrong! Waitresses may not carry drinks INTO a restaurant or bar, meaning they can't bring a drink to work. I guess they'll just have to get one there!
