Dumb and Stupid Laws in Kansas

Janet Trieschman
Dumbness and stupidity can be found at the highest levels of our society. The law is not exempt from examples of stupidity. And it is found far and wide across our country in each and every state. All states have weird and dumb laws on the books. It is often more time consuming and costly to have them removed, so there they sit. They usually aren't acted upon but they are legal and binding and can be enacted upon if an officer of the law wanted to do so. Some are actually new and have been used recently. How strange are Kansas's weird laws? Here are the top five strangest laws in Kansas. These are listed here in descending order for your entertainment. It is hoped that you would not use them to enact a citizen's arrest! Talk about dumb and stupid!

Kansas is known as the sunflower state.

Number 5

Rabbits may not be shot from motorboats.

Gosh darn it, the lakes are so full of the pesky wabbits!

Number 4

The state game rule prohibits the use of mules to hunt ducks.

I guess the mules are a bother - to the hunters or the ducks?

Number 3

No one may catch fish with his bare hands.

If I could catch fish with my bare hands, I'd want to brag and show off.

Number 2

Pedestrians crossing the highways at night must wear tail lights.

Our next vacation will be to Kansas, I just want to see this one!

Number 1

If two trains meet on the same track, neither shall proceed until the other has passed.

Huh? The epitome of stupidity.

Some of my favorite laws that are specific to certain towns:

Derby

Persons may not "screech" their tires while driving.

Dodge City

It is illegal to spit on a sidewalk.

Adding a whole new meaning to the words "Dodge City"!

Topeka

No one may sing the alphabet on the streets at night.

Spitting on sidewalks is expressing forbidden.

They must have been to Dodge City.
