Dumb and Stupid Laws in North Carolina

Janet Trieschman
Dumbness and stupidity can be found at the highest levels of our society. The law is not exempt from examples of stupidity. And it is found far and wide across our country in each and every state. All states have weird and dumb laws on the books. It is often more time consuming and costly to have them removed, so there they sit. They usually aren't acted upon but they are legal and binding and can be enacted upon if an officer of the law wanted to do so. Some are actually new and have been used recently. How strange are North Carolina's weird laws? Here are the top five strangest laws in North Carolina. These are listed here in descending order for your entertainment. It is hoped that you would not use them to enact a citizen's arrest! Talk about dumb and stupid!

Number 5

No one may be a professional fortune-teller, and if one wishes to pursue the practice as an amateur, it must be practiced in a school or church.

Good luck finding a church or a school that would allow this!

Number 4

It is illegal to have sex in a churchyard.

Why oh why is there a law about this? I don't want to even imagine.

Number 3

If a man and a woman who aren't married go to a hotel/motel and register themselves as married then, according to state law, they are legally married.

Cheaper than paying for a wedding? - just plan the honeymoon! - Oh and pull the shades down (see number 2)

Number 2

While having sex, you must stay in the missionary position and have the shades pulled.

If the shades are pulled, how will anyone know you aren't in the missionary position?

Number 1

The mere possession of a lottery ticket is illegal in North Carolina and may result in a $2,000 fine.

Is there a new way to play the lottery without a ticket? Somebody needs to talk to the North Carolina Lottery and North Carolina Powerball organizations.

Please note: This piece is written as humor. It is meant as entertainment only. For some reason, this needs to be stated for some readers.

How do they think up these laws? I lived in North Carolina when I was first married and didn't know about these laws!
