Dumb and Stupid Laws in North Dakota

Janet Trieschman
Dumbness and stupidity can be found at the highest levels of our society. The law is not exempt from examples of stupidity. And it is found far and wide across our country in each and every state. All states have weird and dumb laws on the books. It is often more time consuming and costly to have them removed, so there they sit. They usually aren't acted upon but they are legal and binding and can be enacted upon if an officer of the law wanted to do so. Some are actually new and have been used recently. How strange are North Dakota's weird laws? Here are the top five strangest laws in North Dakota. These are listed here in descending order for your entertainment. It is hoped that you would not use them to enact a citizen's arrest! Talk about dumb and stupid!

Caveat: North Dakota only had five laws listed, so even though they aren't all that strange here they are:

Number 5

From Fargo:

One may be jailed for wearing a hat while dancing, or even for wearing a hat to a function where dancing is taking place.

Can anyone say Footloose movie?

Number 4

From Devils Lake

New Year's celebrations are somewhat bland in this town as fireworks may not be set off after 11:00 PM!

You mean someone is still awake in Devils Lake after 11:00 PM?

Number 3

It is legal to shoot an Indian on horseback, provided you are in a covered wagon.

No problem, just get him off the horse.

Number 2

It is illegal to lie down and fall asleep with your shoes on.

Lie down with shoes on - OK (don't fall asleep), fall asleep with shoes on - OK(sitting up); just don't do all three together.

Number 1

Beer and pretzels can't be served at the same time in any bar or restaurant.

What in the world did the pretzel do to the beer?
