Dumb and Stupid Laws in New York

Janet Trieschman
Dumbness and stupidity can be found at the highest levels of our society. The law is not exempt from examples of stupidity. And it is found far and wide across our country in each and every state. All states have weird and dumb laws on the books. It is often more time consuming and costly to have them removed, so there they sit. They usually aren't acted upon but they are legal and binding and can be enacted upon if an officer of the law wanted to do so. Some are actually new and have been used recently. How strange are New York's weird laws? Here are the top five strangest laws in New York. These are listed here in descending order for your entertainment. It is hoped that you would not use them to enact a citizen's arrest! Talk about dumb and stupid!

Number 5

Slippers are not to be worn after 10:00 PM.

For a city that doesn't sleep at night, they are pretty strict about their nightclothes wearing! But seriously, I can't imagine why they'd write this law.

Number 4

The penalty for jumping off a building is death.

Doesn't this go without saying? Especially with the size of the buildings in New York?

Number 3

While riding in an elevator, one must talk to no one, and fold his hands while looking toward the door.

Good to know, I didn't know there was protocol for elevators. Now we know.

Number 2

It is illegal for a woman to be on the street wearing "body hugging clothing".

See number 1.

Number 1

Women may go topless in public, providing it is not being used as a business.

Wearing clothes = illegal, no clothes = legal. I don't get it. I guess in New York you just have to let it all hang out because if you try to control it, you get arrested.

Are these all New York City laws, or are some of these from small towns upstate? At any rate, they are hilarious.
