Dummy Security Camera: Is it Enough for Your Security Needs?

In many business areas, cameras have become a critical tool in the control and monitoring of clients, staff and the public in general. Cameras are also being put up in public areas, including roads, airports ad many other areas where people can be found in large numbers or where security is critical. In some areas, cameras are hidden from view to prevent potential culprits from knowing the precise location of the camera.

The majority of these cameras are fully functional. However, due to financial constraints or as an additional security measure, fake or dummy cameras are now being increasingly used.

The most important attribute of a fake camera is that it must be clearly visible. Sometimes ignorance can be a very good security tool. Having a camera out in the clear can give the impression to potential trouble makers that they are under scrutiny and can prevent them from carrying out a nefarious intent.

There are many forms of these false cameras and some are quite sophisticated. Some models are equipped with motion sensors. Some may also be capable of movement. On some models flashing lights are active.

When the sensor detects motion, the camera can be moved as if following the action. The camera can also seem to move the lens as if refocusing or zooming in and out for a better view. Some of the cameras will activate the flashing light whenever motion is detected.

Other false cameras will do any or all of the above at random even when there is no motion.

This elaborate subterfuge is designed to fool the people that they are under surveillance.

The false cameras can also be added into high security areas to give the impression that the area is under a lot of scrutiny thereby preventing commissioning of crimes.

Cameras of this sort can be put in homes, businesses and public areas to help in preventing criminal activity by fooling people into believing that they are being watched.

A major advantage of employing fake cameras is the cost implication. Fake cameras are much cheaper than the real thing and very often can be just as effective in preventing excesses by criminals and the like.

Where security is of paramount importance, it would be very foolish though to rely on the fake camera to deter the criminal. Real cameras must also be installed. Should a crime be committed, some recording may be found, whereas, nothing will be available where only false cameras are used.
