Its a known fact that when most people see a security camera, they will assume that they are under surveillance. It is also a fact that when people think they're under surveillance, they are less likely to commit criminal acts.
Enter the dummy cam.
The dummy cam is a simple idea that works off of the principle of deterrence. If the dummy security camera is able to deter just one criminal act it will pay for itself several times over. The dummy cams are low maintenance and require a fairly simple installation process which anyone can do, especially since there are no wires involved. To ensure the integrity of the dummy cams, be sure to limit the number of people you tell the truth about the cameras to, and try to install them during times of the day when people in the area are less likely to notice that there isn't any actual wiring going on during the installation process. Some faux camera dealers will even offer to install the cameras for a minimal fee. Having the presence of a third party "installation" company will further sell the deterrent to anyone in the area.
The dummy cam is the perfect solution for any business or property owner that wants to eventually install a real security camera system but doesn't presently have the money. Just because someone doesn't have the money to pay for a security system, it doesn't mean that they have to settle for no security. Anyone who installs the dummy system should consider installing actual security cameras, as the funds become available, one by one until each dummy camera is replaced. Although not required, people have to realize that no deterrent can stop 100% of crime. When crime does happen, actual security footage of the incident may be the only thing that helps police capture the bad guys. Capturing the bad guys may be the only way for the victim to get full restitution.
A dummy security camera is about just as effective as a dummy police car. If you've never seen a dummy police car, just imagine an empty police car parked on the side of a busy high way. Since most people notice the car before the cop, they're more likely to slow down and pay attention to their driving when they see the empty cop car, and whether they eventually see the real cop or not. You can imagine how cost effective this is for busy police departments because while a dummy car slows down traffic on a busy highway, an actual cop can be responding to an real emergency. The same principal goes for the dummy cams. When people notice your security system, they are probably going to notice the giant cameras on the walls before they see any monitors or recording hardware. This means that people who see a security camera will follow the rules for no other reason than they think they're being watched. By making people think that they're being watched, you allow their minds to supply the recording hardware and the monitors for free.
Unfortunately, a distracted driver might not see the dummy police car, and therefore may speed right past it. Since the police car would be empty, there would be no recourse for the blatant disregard of rules. This sends a bad message to anyone who sees the dummy cop car, the speeding driver, and the lack of consequences. Likewise, someone may be so distracted that they don't even notice the faux cameras or they could be so bold that they don't care. Either way, there are no consequences for the criminal unless there is an eye witness who is willing to testify, able to recall details under pressure, and confident enough with their own memory to justify the consequences of swearing under oath that another human being is guilty of a crime. With the aid of security cameras, identifying marks and features can be verified, license plates can be traced, and more clues can be offered in general that may not have been offered by just an eye witness alone.
In all fairness, not even a traditional security camera system can solve 100% of crimes, but they do help solve more crimes and offer more evidence to prosecutors than not, and that is a point which can't be argued.
