Duncan Hines Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix

I like to bake but I do not find time to partake in my hobby very often. It seems that if I have the time to bake I am missing some crucial ingredient. Often times I resort to using Baking Mixes such as Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker when I want to bake cakes, cookies or muffins for my family. While shopping last week I found a pretty great deal on Duncan Hines Family Recipe Chocolate Chip Cookies so I purchased 3 boxes of the mix for $1 each. In this review I will focus on this product in an effort to help other consumers make an informed buying decision the next time they are looking for a product such as cookie mixes.

Each box makes around sixteen cookies. The ingredients needed are simple and common in most homes, butter and an egg. I will admit, the first batch of cookies was terrible and my fault. I screwed up because instead of actually taking the 30 seconds to read the directions, I looked at the pictures and added a full stick of butter... instead of the 1 tablespoon the directions call for. So the firs batch was a flop. I did not even bake these when I realized what I had done wrong. I started over on batch 2. I followed the directions to a T. The cookies began baking, and they smelled great. They did not look great. They were not flat, but the texture was off. My Duncan Hines Family Recipe Chocolate Chip Cookies looked nothing like the box. They tasted great, but they were not pretty. I felt so discouraged that I gave up my baking attempts for the day, and I have not tried to bake the third box yet.

I can't say that this is a bad product, but I will say it is not the best on the market. The price was right, but the mix was very lumpy, and the cookies did not bake as I hoped they would. I do admit that I flubbed the first batch due to my carelessness, but the second batch I followed the directions completely. As I said earlier, the texture and appearance of the finished product would be my only complaint. The taste was fantastic.

I will probably purchase this brand again, and I will definitely try to bake the third batch soon and hope for optimal results. I would recommend the Duncan Hines brand to others who enjoy using baking mixes.

This is actually a good mix to use as a base. I use oil instead of butter. I add more choc chips and 7 oz of shredded coconut plus a tablespoon of good vanilla. It is good to refrigerate the dough for a while and make sure you use a cool cookie sheet. They tend to make for a thicker cookie. Don't over bake. 12-14 minutes for a large cookie is more than enough. Just so that it is brown. Cool on rack for 2-3 minutes then put in a container. it will help keep the moisture in the cookie. otherwisse they fry out quickly.
