"Dungaree Doll" Singer, Eddie Fisher, Dies at 82

Valerie Ferrari
When I think of Eddie Fisher, even before the Liz and Debbie scandal comes to mind, I think of two of his songs.

I was just a wee lassie when Eddie was really popular, but my mother used to sing his song "Cindy, Oh Cindy" and I also remember "Dungaree Doll.' I can't remember where I first heard it, but I've never forgotten the song. Maybe it captured my imagination when I was playing with my dolls. I remember having a bride doll that my brother fed water colors, and a Tiny Tears. "Dungaree Doll" preceded Mattel's Barbie doll by several years.

In a way, it's even a slice of 50s history from way back when some folks used to call jeans "dungarees." In the song, although he calls the girl his dungaree doll, he tells her to paint her initials on his jeans.

Eddie's signature song was "Oh My Papa," but I never much liked that one. Evidently, I didn't like slow songs even when I was in diapers. But what did I know? "Oh, My Papa" was a No. 1 hit in 1953.

Eddie's other No. 1 hits were "Wish You Were Here" (1952), "I'm Walking Behind You" (1953) and "I Need You Now" (1954). "Dungaree Doll" reached No. 7 on the music chart in 1955.

Well, that's it. You can read a regular obituary article on Eddie Fisher's life, if you are so inclined, on Go. St Louis.com.

I just wanted to share a little girl's favorite Eddie Fisher song.

Thanks, Eddie. Rest in peace.

Thanks for nice comments everyone. Another thing I read about Eddie back in the day was he was only about 5'4" and his first three wives, Debbie Reynolds, Liz Taylor and Connie Stevens were all 5'2"
