Dunkin' Donuts Recall Due to Salmonella Contamination Just a Precaution

Nina Rotz
Dunkin' Donuts, popular US coffee and baked goods chain, has issued a precautionary recall of their hot chocolate and Dunkaccino brand beverages. Dunkaccino is a beverage combination of coffee and hot chocolate. The recall was ordered by Dunkin' Donuts after learning equipment at a suppliers' facility may be contaminated with salmonella. It is important to note that Dunkin' Donuts products or beverages are not directly contaminated with salmonella, and that the recall comes as a precaution to ensure consumer safety. No consumer illnesses have been reported, supplier Plainview Milk Products Cooperative voluntarily its instant non-fat dried milk and whey protein due to possibility of contamination by salmonella bacteria.

Consumer Fear of Salmonella Related to Other Recalls
Dunkin' Donuts is just one of the many US companies taking precautionary measures to protect consumers from potential salmonella outbreaks. Salmonella and E.Coli outbreaks in our nation's food chains have been more common recently, with companies pulling products off grocery store shelves.

Kellogg's Keebler Cookies, Special K Bars Recall
In February 2009, Kellogg's announced a voluntary recall of its Keebler Cookies and Special K Bars, due to a potential salmonella contamination. Much like Dunkin' Donuts, Kellogg's pulled products off shelves voluntarily because of a supplier's announcement that equipment and ingredients may have a salmonella contamination. No illnesses were reported in Kellogg's recall.

Nestlé Toll House Cookie Dough Recall
Nestlé, US based nutritional product company, announced a recall of its popular refrigerated cookie dough due to an E.Coli contamination. In June 2009, Nestlé Toll House Cookie Dough products were pulled off of store shelves, after being alerted by the FDA. Nestle contamination outbreak reportedly sickened 69 individuals around the country.

Regal Health Food International Inc. Pistachio Recall
In June 2009, Regal Health Food International Inc. recalled a varied of its in-shell pistachio products due to a possible salmonella contamination. In this recall, much like Dunkin' Donuts, no illnesses were reported. The voluntary recall was on pistachio products distributed October 2008 through March 31, 2009, nationwide. Recall included Regal Gourmet Snacks Pistachios, a 9-ounce bag of natural, in-shell, roasted and salted pistachios.

As of July 1st, 2009 at 9:50AM, official Dunkin' Donuts website offered no press releases or further information about the voluntary recall of its hot chocolate and Dunkaccino brand beverages.

I never knew this happened, its been a long time since I visited a Dunkin' Donuts anyway, but my mom in New York does all the time, wondering if that's why she was so sick a month ago, and they didn't know the cause. It lasted a long time. She's better now though, thank goodness. Great article.
