"Going Dutch," as it was referred to a few generations ago, was not always as popular as it is these days. With the onset of women's rights and the need for independence, many women prefer to pay their own way. There's nothing wrong with this unless it hurts someone's ego. Try not to let it, even if you're on old fashioned guy.
Dutch dating simply means that each person pays for their own meal, movie ticket or function that's being attended. This is generally how people go out if they're just friends, but it's gaining popularity in romantic relationships as well. However, many people go Dutch if both parties are on a budget. It still allows you to go out, have a good time and not have to worry about the whole expense falling on one person's shoulders.
Many people often go Dutch because they are uncomfortable with someone else paying their way. This is common with women who are liberal or independent minded, but it's also common with many men too. Couples these days can be old-fashioned while still enjoying their own independence.
Often times, Dutch dating indicates that you will meet each other at the location by arriving in seperate vehicles. This is great if you'll be in a downtown area and can walk to the places you want to go, but if you have dinner and theatre plans on opposite sides of town, you may want to meet in a central location and ride together. This should be discussed during the planning process of the date.
If this is a first date and you're unsure of each other, it is totally acceptable to take seperate cars. This way neither of you feel vulnerable or stuck in a situation you may not want in. Either person should have the freedom to end the date at any time. Going Dutch and arriving in separate vehicles leaves this option open.
Dutch dating is often more casual and creates a comfortable environment many people are satisfied with when starting a new relationship. It also relieves the pressure of someone feeling like they owe the other person something in return.
Most single women understand the expenses associated with dating and don't believe it's fair that a man should have to pay for everything. This is especially true if you've decided to go to a more expensive restaurant. However, some single women are very independent and want to pay their own way regardless.
To avoid any conflicts, this should be discussed prior to the date. There's no sense in starting off on the wrong foot.
