Redefining the Role of Administrative Assistant

Sharon Cohen
People in every workplace speak of team building, working as a team, and my team, but few understand how to create the experience of team building or how to develop an effective team. Many view teams as the best organization design for involving all employees in creating business success and profitability. As a team, the Administrator and their Assistant should encourage a passionate approach to business responsibilities and duties. Special care should be taken to avoid discouragement. Success will depend on nurturing the desire to perform every day without seeking external motivation.

As any Administrative Assistant can tell you, the job requires immense creativity. It may be rather surprising to realize that creativity captured in a task or project is only a small percentage of what is necessary. Creativity must be contagious. To support an Administrator who lacks creativity is a disaster in waiting. It becomes the responsibility of the Administrative Assistant to infuse or share the creative process with the Administrator. The successful Assistant will see new opportunities that are not apparent to others and share them with the Administrator. Again, humility will come into play in this example. Credit must be shared within the team. Individual credit is never appropriately claimed by the Assistant but should go, rather, to the Administrator so that both may be elevated.

The zeal of growth combined with the zeal of profits is a potent mix in business. To succeed today, Administrators are required to achieve on both fronts. Failure to do both, even while performing well is a harbinger of slow obsolescence for any company. The Administrative Assistant is crucial to the game plan. Technology has added an evolutionary influence to corporate performance today. It is commonplace in business to depend upon the Administrative Assistant to remain on the cutting edge of technology.

Administrative Assistants provide technical support in the identification, design, and development of computer technology solutions and their integration into the work environment. They should be prepared to assist with the management of any resulting changes in business processes and culture, which can be streamlined by applying smooth integration and migration strategies. The Administrative Assistant will advise on new business initiatives that may derive from the application of computer technology.

It cannot be said often enough that the relationship of an Administrator and the Administrative Assistant forms a team. It takes teams to win in business. To move faster in today's business world, they will have to team up to stay at speed. Even though business today is automated, people are not. Teams with discreet and shared responsibility are a simple, proactive tactic for keeping business steadily growing. Teams with good chemistry balance each other, compliment weaknesses with strengths and provide a far more consistent energy and focus.

Good article. I was an admin for many years and to this date, I don't think they've been able to replace my talents at the place I left. Admins are such an under appreciated lot!

I totally agree. I had the best AA before I retired and we were in total sync. Made eveything work better.
