Duties of Television Floor Manager

Jamie Brown
A television TV floor manager is a worker that acts as an intermediary between the director and the floor of a television production set. He is an essential cog in the wheel during the taping of a television show. A floor manager has to be an efficient communicator and very organized in order to complete his various duties.

Interact with Director

The television floor manager must maintain a close working relationship with the director of the production. He must communicate with the director daily to get directives to pass onto the talent and other crew members on the floor. He receives information in-person from the director prior to the show and through his earpiece during the show. The floor manager is also involved with the planning and consulting stage of the television production. He may provide the director with advice or research related to the show.

Talk to Talent & Crew and Give Cues

The television floor manager must also work closely with the talent or guests of the show. He helps actors and guests get prepared for their roles and relays messages from the director, who is in the control room. He oversees rehearsals before the actual performance and discusses requirements for the show with all crew members. The television floor manager is responsible for briefing everyone who is involved with the television production about the schedule, format, and any changes regarding the show. He is also the person who gives cues to the hosts, presenters, and talent when it's showtime.

Check Equipment & Monitor Floor

The television floor manager is responsible for assuring that all of the stage equipment and props are working properly and in place before the show begins. The manager is present when the crew performs technical checks and helps resolve technical issues. He monitors the activities of crew members to assure that each person is performing his duties correctly. This television worker must inform the director immediately if there are issues prior to production.

Prepare Audience

For television productions that require a studio audience, the television floor manager must speak with the audience members beforehand and prepare them for the show. He must explain the rules for audience participation, emergency exits, and cues for audience applause or reaction to elements of the show. He must resolve any issues within the audience personally, such as removal of an unruly person.
