A Yuletide Surprise Full of South Park, Ren & Stimpy and The Tick

Simon Spectre

Having trouble looking for the perfect Christmas gift for the animation nut. The Holidays are around the corner and time is running out. Lucky, there are three DVD box sets to choose from that would satisfy any adult child. South Park the Complete Eighth Season follows the continuing adventures of four foul-mouthed little boys in their quaint little mountain town. Ren & Stimpy the Lost Episodes features the antics of the crazy Chihuahua and his idiot feline friend. The Tick versus Season one chronicles the misadventures of the big blue superhero and his sidekick Arthur battling the forces of evil. Any or all of these DVD collections will make fine stocking stuffer bringing a smile to that special cartoon fan.

The three DVD Box set of South Park the complete Eighth Season contains all fourteen episodes of the 2004 season, each one filled with gut busting laughs and smart satire, from children playing with weapons, to a competition for TV ratings. As usual the show pokes fun at Hollywood and celebrity icons with memorable episodes such as "The Jeffersons," " The Stupid Spoiled Whore video play set," and of course "The Passion of the Jew." The Eighth season also tackles tough political and social issues, such as Immigration, when people from the future come to the present time to get work below minimum wage and steroid use in the Special Olympics. The boys of course, are up to their own antics as usual, confronting a bully from the past and fighting the evil of Wal-Mart. Other adventures include Cartman using his "psychic" gift for profit. Stan must assemble the best dancers to compete against professional dancers in a parody of the movie "You Got Served." The season, however, does end on a festive note with a zany Christmas adventure involving satanic animals.

Like the previous season box sets, the complete eighth contains brief commentaries on each episode by the South Park creators as a special feature. Despite the limited number of special features, the Box set of South Park's eighth season is a nice treat for anyone who enjoys adult oriented animation, and is by far definitely a must have for any South Park fan.

If you are looking for an alternative to South Park, then Ren & Stimpy the Lost Episodes will be the perfect choice. This box set contains the six episodes of the infamous Ren & Stimpy Adult party Cartoon on two disks. Only four of episodes aired briefly on the Spike TV network in 2003. The other two episodes were never shown on television for being to risqué. Inspired by Fan requests, Bob Clampett cartoons and the comedy of the Three Stooges, these episodes from mind of John Kricfalusi are a tour de force in slapstick humor. Firedogs 2, the sequel to the classic first season episode follows continuing Ren and Stimpy's adventures in a fire department with an animated version of famed cartoonist Ralph Bakshi.

Although the early Ren & Stimpy cartoons from the nineties may have been somewhat child friendly despite the use of toilet humor and subtle adult undertones, the lost episodes are meant for mature audiences and should not be viewed by children. These episodes contain strong language and place Ren & Stimpy deep into adult situations such as nudity. Some of the jokes and situations involve characters in simulated sexual acts. Ren & Stimpy: The Lost Episodes is a cartoon show that is most definitely not for the eyes and ears of children. The Special Features included in this DVD set are two introductions by Weird Al Yankovic and the shows creator John Kricfalusi, as well as small introductions for each of the six episodes and candid interviews with some of the people who have worked on the show. In spite of the adult material, this DVD box set will be a great addition to any collection of animation.

If you are looking for something that is a little more children friendly unlike South Park and Ren & Stimpy the Lost episodes, you might want to consider the of the Tick animated series, finally available on DVD with The Tick versus Season One box set. Based on the popular comic book of the same name, the Tick animated series shows the adventures of the big blue superhero and his moth sidekick Arthur defending The City against dastardly villains and their quest for justice. Like the comic book, the animated series is filled with colorful heroes and bizarre villains such as Chairface Chippendale and El Seed. This wonderfully funny show offers an uncommon look at super hero life in a surreal world filled with mad scientists, mutant monsters and civic minded super heroes. Even though the show occasionally puts some of the characters in subtle adult situations, there is no use of profanity or overt adult activity, making safe for small children to watch. The two-disk box set contains twelve of the thirteen episodes of the original animated series. The episode titled "The Tick vs. the Mole Men," considered the weakest of the series, may be included in a future DVD set. The Tick versus Season 1 does not have any special features, but the show, on its own, is worth having if not for the humor and fantastic characters then for the nostalgia of great cartoon that was ahead of its time.

Well with Christmas time getting closer, and your still in need of some gifts for that special person that is hard to shop for, you have three DVD option to chose from. South Park the Complete Eight Season continues the adventures of the foul mouth little boys from that tiny mountain town. Ren & Stimpy: The Lost Episodes bring back the crazy cartoon due with naughtier and wilder cartoons. The Tick Versus Season one finally brings the big blue goofy super hero to DVD and his quest to fight evil with the rolled up newspaper of goodness. The South Park Box set is modestly priced below fifty dollars. The price range for both "Ren & Stimpy: the Lost Episodes" and "The Tick versus Season 1" is from $21.00 to $25.00. Each DVD box set can be found online or in retail stores. All these great animation Box Sets will make wonderful Christmas Gifts together or individually for any mature cartoon fan, even as a gift for yourself.
