DVD Review: 'Enchanted' Starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, and Susan Sarandon

A Third-Degree Burn that is Truly 'Enchanting'

David E. Barnett
We all know that Disney is very good at making the animated film based on our favorite fairy tales, but in 'Enchanted', they take the fairy-tale world and turn it on its ear with this hilarious laugh riot.

Our story begins with Giselle (played by Adams) who is waiting for her true love to come and find her and whisk her away to his kingdom forever. Her love, although, is not just any man but the handsome Prince Edward who falls in love with her due to the fact that the two of them have the ability to sing a duet together. In most fairy tales, though, we also cannot forget the villain who comes in the form of the Wicked Queen (played by Sarandon) who decides to do away with Giselle by sending her to our world past her fairy-tale kingdom. New York is then turned upside down at the appearance of this flighty, beautiful and not-too bright maiden who teaches them about the importance of love in any relationship and what true love really means.

In her travels, she meets the skeptical divorce lawyer, Robert (played by Dempsey), a cynical and factual man who does not believe in love but rather in compatibility and also the power of divorce. Raising his young daughter, Morgan, alone, Robert's life seems that it is just the way that he likes it. That is, until he meets Giselle and soon begins to fall in love with her after he rescues her from atop an electric sign during a rainstorm. To make matter worse, Edward has also come to our world in search of his fair maiden only to find that things do not actually go about as planned. After attempting to slay a bus that he mistakes for a form of dragon and nearly killing New York sewer workers to find Giselle, Edward soon finds that his work may be cut out for him in his endeavors. Not only that, but Edward's companion and the Queen's addle-pated boyfriend, Mortimer, is also sent back in order to kill Giselle so that she may maintain her throne.

This, by far, is one of Disney's most hilarious romps in ages to this source. While there was enough cheese in the film that a saltine factory would never have want again, this is what made the film so enjoyable. 'Enchanted' is a completely mindless comedy that shines with heart, humor and satire that will make you want to get up and cheer or get up and dance with all of the fine music and dancing that was choreographed into the film. This one is definitely a winner!

My rating for this film is five stars out five. If you have not seen it yet, take a day out of your work week and go check it out. You will thank yourself for it later!
