DVD Review Saturday Night Live the Best of Tracy Morgan

Eric Jackson
I really enjoy the Saturday Night Love best of collections. They usually have the best skits from top SNL performers. The SNL best of collection for Tracy Morgan is not one of those sets. I love Tracy Morgan stand up, Martin, his starring role on 30 Rock, and his random interviews. His SNL years (1996-2003) did not treat him well. I mean if this is the best collection you can put together after 7 years then maybe you shouldn't have stayed on the show at all. You can tell which skits were written by Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan though and they do provide some strange entertainment. I want to be very clear Tracy Morgan is funny this collection is not.

Review
Tracy Morgan is very quotable and most of these skits have one thing that really sticks in your brain. Brian Fellows kills me simply because it really is a guy with a 6th grade education talking about animals. Astronaut Jones has a catchy song and you can totally see the Tracy Morgan Tin Fey vibe working on this one. It's funny because it's strange. The Weekend Update stuff screams time filler and isn't very funny. Homeless Sewer Guy with Kate Hudson is great because they both totally go for it and fall in love. Tracy as Shaq's Dad is truly funny simply because it shows how large Shaq really is and then Tracy has to deal with it. Barflies is not funny, but there is something honest and sickly sweet about it. Morgan and Maya Rudolph captured something real and then backed it up with the song.

The Audition Video in the Bonus Features isn't funny, but shows a larger Tracy showing off his acting chops. The interviews are good, but the 1st one is Tracy simply talking about the Audition Video. The thing I hate about this collection is that there are funnier Tracy Morgan skits from SNL and the set just doesn't have them. Where is the Behind the Music with Fat Albert?

"I'm Brian Fellows!"

"Osama Bin Laden is an Uncle Tom!"
