DVD Review: The Wizard of Oz

The MGM movie, The Wizard of Oz has always been one of my favorite movies. I can't believe that it was made in 1939! The movie just seems magical and timeless.

I can still remember the feeling of awe I felt as a kid when Dorothy came out of the house into Oz and suddenly everything was in bright, bold color! It was gorgeous! And the Emerald City, have you ever seen a city so pretty and green? I loved it then and I love it now. And since I love horses so much, how could I not love the horse of another color? Of course since I had a horse, I did know that each different-colored horse was a totally different horse and not the same one but I didn't care, they were beautiful!

When I was a kid, they showed the movie once a year on television. Since it was before the days of VCR's and DVD's, I watched The Wizard of Oz every year because it was the only way that I could see it. I never got tired of it.

I've always loved it that Dorothy keeps trying to get home. I mean, she really WANTS to go home. I thought that she must have had a really good home life. Then Dorothy makes some really good friends. And they stand with her in the face of trouble and they all help each other because that's what friends do. Then finding out that each one already had what they most longed for, well, I cried now and again during the movie. I still do a little bit.

And I love the wicked witch. She's the perfect evil, the classic bad guy that you just have to hate. Plus she had some of the best movie lines ever! Who doesn't know where the line "I'll get you my pretty and your little dog too" comes from? And what about "I'm melting, melting, ooohhhh.....?"

I love the music from The Wizard of Oz. I even had to get the CD.

They show The Wizard of Oz movie more often on TV now than once a year. Plus I do have the DVD and I can watch it anytime that I want. AND I can watch bonus features on the DVD like the Making of the movie and deleted scenes or songs. Then there's the Wizard of Oz books that are based on the movie that I've picked up through the years. I can get a full dose of The Wizard of Oz anytime I want because I just don't get tired of it. The magic is still alive....
