Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2: Review (PS3)

S.R.
Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 is a Beat Em' Up video game released on Playstation 3 and developed by Omega Force. The first Dynasty Warriors: Gundam was met with minimal fanfare, though I have to admit I totally loved the idea. Classic case of great idea, mediocre execution. Let's see how Omega Force did this time around.

Story : If you've seen any kind of Japanese anime with Mechas, the story here will be exactly like that. You're an angsty teenager and you gain control of a giant death robot. Your goal? To destroy other giant death robots of course!

Graphics : The graphics haven't been upgraded much from the first Gundam game, if at all. Which is really unfortunate. Compared to games being released today, this isn't very good and it shows. Comparison screen shots are cringe worthy even. That's not to say the graphics are bad, they did a good job two years ago on the first Gundam game. However, they simply don't hold up to modern games.

Sound : The voice acting is horrible. It almost makes the game unplayable, and I'm being as generous as possible. If you can manage to ignore the voice acting, it doesn't end there. The music can be cheesy or it can be cheesily awesome. It really depends on the mood you're in. The sound effects good enough and appropriate.

Game play : The game mostly plays like any other Dynasty Warriors, game is a good thing. You're placed onto giant maps and then you conquer and destroy everything. The main objective main change but basically you're just a wrecking machine set to destroy everything in your path. There is virtually no learning curve here, and that's also a good thing. You can plug in, turn your mind off, and enjoy the carnage. All the usual stuff is here, you can upgrade your Mecha, gain special abilities, and generally get stronger as you progress through the game.

The difficulty is perfect. At no moment in the game are you throwing your controller in frustrating, but neither do you ever feel like the game offers no challenge. There are few problems, however. The stories are taken directly from the first Gundam game. So those looking for complete immersion will be very, very disappointed. The other mode, Mission, is quite good however as you can play each singular pilot's story by itself. The freedom in this game is simply astounding. You are hardly ever forced to absolutely complete one mission before moving on, you can bounce around and have fun with it.

Re playability : Off the charts. I couldn't even sum up all the things to do in this game in it's own review, let one one paragraph. If you like this game and buy it, you will get your money's worth.

Overall : 7/10. Mediocre graphics, bad stories, but addicting game play and tons of re playability boost the score a lot.
