Eager by Helen Fox - Book Review

Walter Kovacs
Eager by Helen Fox is a good book for all ages. It is an easy read, and the story is a ton of fun. The book begins when the Bell family decides they need a new robot to help the one they have. They go speak to a professor who goes by the name of Ogden in search of a new robot. He gives them EGR3, a robot who can think and reason for itself (a new technology that has never been seen before). EGR3 (renamed Eager), is a very interesting robot. It actually learns, which is an interesting process to watch. One of the first things he does learn is "If a baby get's dirty, you give it a bath, not a rinse cycle."

The book does have a more interesting plot than this though. A company named LifeCorp, which builds most of the robots for the people of the world, releases a new model call the BDC4. These BDC4s are completely amazing and super humanlike, but are sort of odd. When one almost hits a girl (Rule Number 1 of Robot Code: A Robot Will Never Harm A Human), Gavin Bell, Eager's best human friend, gets suspicious. His suspicions are answered when about 100 BDC4s take over the Technocrat (rich people) part of the city.

Eager must find a way to stop the BDC4s, even though they are huge and massive and strong, and in the process, he may just discover what it is to live.

This is a good book, and the plot is interesting, yet sometimes slow and low on action. There are some long words, so I would keep this book away from anyone under the age of 1. This book is a really quick read thought only about 280 pages long. I was able to finish it one 5 hour plane trip to Utah, but I am a quick reader.

This book is not just about the plot either. These is a lesson to be learned by all the characters. For Gavin, do not discount a friend because of their appearance (at one point, he is embarrassed that his best friend is a robot). for Fleur (Gavin's Sister), sometimes, the best friends are the ones you would never expect. I say this because she has a friend:' ho is a technocrat, and she is always embarrassed to have EGR3 around her when she is with her friends.

She becomes great friend with Eager as the book goes along. And finally, for Eager, Life is not a beating heart of a digestive system. Life is love, and love is happiness.
