For some, going to the doctor is a routine task, knowing that they will receive the medical treatment and attention they need. For others less fortunate, lack of medical insurance might be an issue. With medical costs so high without insurance, it is a struggle to seek even a speedy trip in to the doctor's office, and many choose to attempt to cope with the problem on their own. For those willing to keep an open mind and try, there is actually a very effective method of preventing an ear ache to turning into an infection and it is probably sitting in your kitchen pantry or cupboard at this very moment. This item is olive oil. You may be skeptical, but I write this article with your and your child's interest at heart, and from personal experience. As a child I was the youngest of 5 children, and our family was on a strict budget. As one could imagine, trips to the doctor were few and far between. If we were ill, my mother would care for us, and somehow always seemed to nurse us back to health. As most kids do from time to time, we seemed to catch the nasty colds and flu's and ear ache's were no exception. The second we began complaining of pain in our ears my mother would turn to her trusty bottle of olive oil in the kitchen cupboard. She would have us lay down (often just before a nap or right at bedtime) and use a cosmetic cotton-ball to distribute the olive oil into our ear canal. She would douse the cotton with a swig from the oil jar and then gently nudge it into our ears a bit, tucking it not too far in yet snug enough that it would not dislodge itself over simple movement.
Sometimes the relief took a short while, and other times we noticed relief in just minutes. Being natural it had no side affects, and it usually only took one or two partial cotton-balls to give me full relief. Even today I too am never shy to administer the same treatment to my little girl when I fear she has an infection on the way, or to myeslf for that matter. She can stay in the comfort of her home, it gives her fast and lasting relief, and it most certainly saves on the pocketbook. This gentle method is great for infants as well as children and adults. I am not discouraging anyone from going to the doctor; by all means if your instinct is telling you to go then you should go. I am instead shedding some light and giving some hope to those who cannot afford medical treatment and letting them know (if they are in doubt and willing to try) there is a way to provide relief to their families too.
