An earache is a most commonly a sign of infection. If ear pain is severe or involves a sudden loss of hearing it is important to get prompt medical care as soon as possible... delay can lead to permanent ear damage.

Pain associated with the outer ear may be a result of boils in the ear canal or from "swimmer's ear." The latter infection occurs frequently during the summer months. It may be treated with Burrow's solution or an equivalent applied four times daily. Aspirin or another analgesic may be taken to help relieve pain caused by earaches. If the pain worsens or persists for more than two days see your doctor. To prevent swimmer's ear, wear a bathing cap or earplugs when swimming.

Middle ear infection is common in children. It is often followed with a respiratory illness and is mainly characterized by partial hearing loss and a feeling of stuffiness in the affected ear. Unfortunately there is no home remedy for a middle ear infection therefore immediate medical attention is required.
