Earliest Memory

Steven Jacob Borthick
One of my earliest memories...

We were playing on the playground
Hide-and-go-seek
I was eleven and you were ten
Michael reached twenty and as a last resort
You threw yourself in the tires
But I was already there
If he'd find either one of us,
He'd find both of us,
Your back was against my chest
I wasn't paying attention to,
"Come out, come out, wherever you are"
All I could think about
Was the feel of your soft arms
Pressed against mines
And your curly ponytail
Against my face
You whispered, "Be very quiet"
And slowed your breathing
And until you turned your head
I had no idea it was a double meaning
And you would kiss my cheek
But my gasp of nervousness
Gave us away and Michael heard
On my earliest memory, the two of us
Were in it together

This moment will be my last memory
If it's to happen now
I'm grateful the two of us
Are leaving this world together
