Early 2011 Oscar Predictions: "Best Picture"

Jenna de Salea
After a couple of bad years for the box-office, quality movies came back in a big way in 2010. So much so that coming up with a list of the top five was really hard to do! But with the Oscars just around the corner, and nominations due out soon, here are some predictions for the "Best Picture" category.

The Nominations

"Black Swan"
This movie starring Natalie Portman and directed by Darren Aronofsky takes us through the world of Ballet, and into the minds of the dancers in a thrilling way. The performances are great, the cinematography and direction are fantastic all set to the thunderous "Swan Lake" score by Tchiakovsky. Already scoring several SAG and Golden Globe nods, this one seems like an almost shoe-in for a nomination.

"True Grit"
The Coen Brothers are award season darlings and this remake of the 1969 classic "True Grit" starring John Wayne is no exception. With an all-star ensemble cast including last year's best actor Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin, this is one remake that might actually be better than the original. But can a new movie eclipse an icon?

"Inception"
A total blockbuster this year starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and directed by Christopher Nolan, "Inception" told the story of a thief stealing secrets from deep inside the subconscious mind. A thought provoking, wonderfully done movie that sort of made us afraid to go to sleep for a while.

"The Social Network"
Isn't it great when a movie lives up to the hype? This film about Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of huge social network site, Facebook lived up to all of its media hype with a brilliantly written, acted, and directed film. David Fincher took Aaron Sorkin's great screenplay and made a riveting movie out of it. With a great lead role in Jesse Eisenberg, "The Social Network" has to be in the lead to win it all.

"The King's Speech"
There always needs to be an artistic entry into the "Best Picture" category and the gorgeously done "The King's Speech" accomplishes it. Starring Colin Firth as King George VI of Britain, Geoffrey Rush as a Speech Therapist, and Helena Bonham carter as Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mum) this is a touching story of overcoming a stutter and leading the country through World War II.

The Winner

"The Social Network"

This movie will get points for meeting and exceeding expectations on a currently hot topic. It's the total package with acting, writing, and direction and will claim the prize.

What do you think? Which movie do you think deserves to win the 2011 Best Picture Oscar?
