Early-Morning School Shooting Jolts Knoxville

Sophomore Dies Afterwards

x
Fifteen-year-old Ryan McDonald was shot to death today by an unidentified fellow student at Knoxville's Central High School around 8 a.m. Thursday morning. The shooting took place in the school cafeteria just before the day was scheduled to begin.

The suspect had allegedly smuggled a small caliber pistol into the school to carry out the act. The shooter fled afterward, and was picked up in a neighborhood near the school about ten minutes later. Police are withholding the identity of the student due to his age.

It seems there was a shoving match between Ryan and the shooter in the cafeteria before the first bell. Students say there was a noise as if somebody had dropped a book on the floor. They report Ryan falling backwards as if he'd been shoved, and then saw him clutching his chest and bleeding profusely from that region.

Pandemonium, of course, ensued, and the students ran from the cafeteria. The school was later locked down, the students bussed to a nearby church afterwards to be picked up by their parents. Central, a AAAA size school, has over 1,400 students enrolled this year.

The 2008-2009 Knox County School Year had just begun; this shooting happened only nine school days into it. Authorities made sure to let everyone know that this was not a random shooting or one aimed at the institution (as was the recent shooting at the Unitarian Universalist church here in Knoxville). According to police, the suspect had come to school with the intention of harming only McDonald.

Eventually, he has been charged with first degree murder around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. He is being held at the juvenile detention center in Knoxville.

Such a tragedy! It saddens me to even think about it.

So very sad. Thank you for helping control the pandemonium and hysteria by making it clear that this was NOT a random shooting. This was one unbalanced, angry teenager seeking revenge against another teen. Good, clear reporting!

Great reporting on this. It is tragic. School just started and already the heavy violence is beginning. Just today about 20 minutes from where I live (Cleveland, Ohio) there was a school shooting at Willoughby South High School.

Mr. Norman, I respectfully disagree, for there are already a plethora of laws regulating firearms in this country. I have to show ID and sign for every box of ammunition I buy, and I have had to sign and register every firearm I own. Believe me, regulation isn't the problem, and more of is definitely not the answer. One of the main problems is the ENFORCEMENT of the laws we already have. That kid got his weapon through devious means, as I am sure he didn't walk into a pawn shop at 15 and buy one like he was buying a CD. When I bought my sidearms, I had to submit to a background check with the BATF and the TBI. Even if you made firearms possession completely illegal (or even a capital crime) that would not stop a criminal from procuring one, but rather make the law-abiding easier prey for them. Thank you for your thoughtful comment, sir!

So sad! God bless all that are involved or related.

Kids just do not understand anything but the present and recent past. They are invincible and morally right, especially when left to their own devices. Granted, this may in no way reflect the parents' involvement, but something is lacking for a kid to lash out in such a horrific way. Rest in Peace, young Ryan. Great report as usual!!!! -J

This is so awful ...some kid ruined his life because he couldn't control himself.
