Earn Extra Income Freelance Writing for Orato

Novice and Seasoned Writers Will Enjoy Writing for Orato

Deanna Lynn Sletten
Orato is a writing site much like Suite101 in style but much easier to join. Orato describes itself as an online news magazine and their mission is to inform readers with substantial, well-written and well-researched articles on a variety of topics such as world news, health and science, entertainment, home and family, travel, business and much more. Orato is easy to join, accepts already published material and is actively looking for freelance writers to join their team.

Joining Orato

Joining Orato is simple, you only need to give your name, e-mail address and set up a password to open an account. No application and no waiting to be accepted. You cannot use a penname; they ask that you use your real name on your profile and articles. They do not require you to give a social security number or EIN number in order to be paid; you are responsible for paying taxes on any income earned. You must have a Pay Pal account, however, for Orato to pay you. Once you have published your first article you will then be able to set up your profile, profile picture and give them your Pay Pal e-mail address.

Writing Articles for Orato

Once you join, you should read their Content Guidelines as well as their Correspondent Handbook and their FAQ's so you understand completely what is expected of you as a writer. You have no minimum articles due and can submit as many or as few articles as you choose. Articles must be a minimum of 250 words with a maximum of 600 words. You may also publish photos, slideshows or videos along with your articles. Orato prefers articles written in the 3rd person; no I's, me's or you's in the articles. You can place previously published material (written by you, of course) on the site but you may have to tweak it first so it fits in with their guidelines. The editors do scan every article for plagiarism, so previously published material must have your real name on it.

Working with Editors at Orato

While your articles do go live the minute you hit the publish button, within 48 hours an editor reads and makes changes to your article if they feel it needs any. That editor can also bump your article up to an Editor's Choice article if it follows the guidelines properly and is well-written. This way your article will be showcased and hopefully receive more hits. Generally, the editor makes the changes and re-publishes it with these changes so you don't have to make the changes yourself. There is a section in your Article Dashboard where you will see a check mark that shows the editor has read your article and you can see side-by-side comparisons of your original article and the article after the changes. If you are a person who doesn't like anyone touching your articles, then you won't want to write for this site. But if you don't mind the editor making a few changes, mostly tweaking the subtitles and fixing grammar errors, then you won't mind writing for this site. If an article needs 50% + tweaking, then the editor will contact you to fix the article.

Understanding Article Rights

You do retain All Rights to your articles published on Orato but you cannot delete articles from this site and the site can use your articles in any form for eternity if it so chooses. You do still earn money on the articles for as long as they earn money. You can re-publish articles you've placed on Orato anywhere that accepts previously published material. And, as mentioned before, the site accepts previously published material. So, you can think of Orato as either a site to place new content or a site to get more mileage out of articles you have already written.

Earning Money at Orato

Orato pays you 20% of the Google Adsense Revenue that the site earns from placing Google ads on your articles. Once you have published 25 articles and have earned a minimum of 5 Editor's Choice awards, they will bump you up to 30% of ad revenue. The site pays you monthly via Pay Pal if you have reached the $10 minimum for the month.

Look at Orato for Yourself

Orato has a professional look and they seem to be on the right track. Orato states that they aren't afraid to use previously published material because they are confident they will soon be outranking the other sites in the search engines. It is a good site for both new writers and seasoned writers to have one more place where they can place their writing and build residual income. Take a look at the site for yourself so you can decide if this is the right freelance writing site for you.

Interesting. I think I'm going to look further into it. Do you get paid in Adsense revenue only?

Thanks for the info. I'll google them to see what others say. Good article.

Wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. They have a horrible reputation and their pay scale (only clicks from Google Adsense) is very low. No one who's a professional writer will even work for them anymore their reputation is so bad :(
