Typically, there are two groups that would like to earn a high school diploma online. The first group is traditional-aged students who for various reasons would prefer not to attend a traditional high school. The second group is adults who did not earn a diploma when they were in high school.
While the needs of these two groups are quite different, the goal - attaining what can sometimes be an elusive piece of paper - is the same.
Online high schools are a good choice for teenagers because they allow these students to use technology in a meaningful way, it allows them to remove themselves from a social situation that may be challenging, and it gives them a greater opportunity for success.
Online high schools are a good choice for adults because they allow these students to avoid the traditional classroom. Yes, it can be embarrassing to sit in a traditional classroom with students noticeably younger than you. In an online classroom, no one knows how old you are.
Types of Programs
There are several types of online high schools. They include:
1. Commercial programs. These are for-profit businesses that provide a service. This does not mean that they do not also provide a quality education. Many of these schools do. One popular example is Laurel Springs School (Ojai, California).
2. Charter schools. These are public schools that are exempt from some of the rules governing other types of schools. While many are "brick-and-mortar" schools, an increasing number are moving online.
3. Government-sponsored. This group includes schools sponsored by state departments of education, county offices of education, or public school districts.
You can find many of these programs by doing Internet searches for "online high schools" and "free online high schools."
Cost
The cost for attending an online high school varies widely from a low of free to a high of over $10,000. Per year. Should you choose a program based on cost alone. Certainly not unless you have no other alternative. Before deciding which program will work best for you
You may have heard that there are free online high schools. There certainly are, but they are subject to a number of restricts. These free online high schools are charter schools or state-sponsored schools. As such, they may only service traditional-aged students. In some specific cases, this may mean that they accept students up to the age of twenty-one. I am aware of no programs that are free for adults above that age.
Necessary Skills
The three necessary skills in order to be a successful online learner include:
1. Independence. You have to have the ability to motivate yourself. There is no teacher standing over you in the same way as a traditional high school.
2. Scheduling. You need to be able to complete assignments in a timely manner.
3. Communication. Virtual learners are successful when the learn to communicate with their online teacher, with the other students, and in the forums.
Conclusion
It is never too late to earn a diploma. Yes, it takes some time. Yes, it takes some energy. However, while sizable numbers of both of the groups above would likely have either dropped out or continued to be a drop-out in the past, there are now so many other options.
Now it is on you to finish that diploma!
