Most people require a certain level of respect from the people that they are involved with, whether it is work colleagues or people that you interact with on a short-term basis. The problem is that although these people literally demand respect towards them, they show no respect for other people.

It is a basic nature to want to be respected by your peers. This is true for every person, regardless of what professional stature they possess. There is always someone above them or below them, and the same respect should apply. The general idea for gaining the respect of others is to first show respect to them. If you are an upper level professional, you should show those who are at lower positions than you the same amount of respect that you desire from them. Think of the old saying "Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself." This is crucial to earning respect.

By showing equal amounts of respect to others, you are making a huge impression. It shows that you value other people. If you show respect to your employees, you are showing them that you have confidence in them and value the work that they do for you. Respecting your employees is an important aspect of an effective workplace. There are a few things that you can do to start showing your employees that you respect them and what they do.

First, you need to show them that you are interested in them; not only in what they are doing at work, but also during the rest of their lives. You should know if they are married and how many children they have. You should know what hobbies that they have. If you take an active interest in the lives of your employees, they will respect you even more for it.

The next thing you can do is make sure that the lines of communication stay open - all the time. This doesn't mean that you need to answer a call at 2 am asking for a ride home, but it means that you should have an open door policy. You should listen to them when they present you with ideas, or have problems both in and out of the workplace.

Have the decency to refer to your employees by name. Your employees will have respect for you if you take the time to learn all their names. This will also help establish a trusting relationship between you and your employees.
