Earth Day is a good time to dispose of all the clutter you've kept for the past year, and there are many places in the Detroit metro area in which to do so. There's also no better time than on Earth Day to teach your children the importance of our natural environment.
I'm hoping this article will help you find things to do in the Detroit Metro Area both to celebrate Earth Day and to be able to recycle your waste.
I'm listing both activities and drop-off sites in the area so you can do Earth Day right. After you're done, maybe you can throw an Earth Day party!
Activities
The Leslie Science and Nature Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is having an educational get-together on Sunday April 26th 2009 from noon to 4pm. No registration required and entry is free. According to their website, there will be plenty of hands-on activities and demonstrations as well as local musicians and a species parade. Attendees are welcome to dress as their favorite animal or plant to participate in the parade.
For more information, contact the Leslie Science and Nature Center at 734-997-1553 or visit their website at lesliesnc.org
The Detroit Zoo also hosts a yearly Earth Day event and in 2009 it's on Saturday, April 18th from 10am to 3pm. They are very family-oriented and will have craft projects, entertainment, rock climbing, and a scavenger hunt through the zoo.

SOCRRA, which services Royal Oak, Michigan, and surrounding areas, is hosting a free tour this year the week of April 20th-25th. Contact them or visit their website to sign up for a tour.

If you're looking for a place to drop off your e-waste or unwanted medications in the Detroit metro area, several places in the area are willing to help on Earth Day:
For E-waste, Best Buy usually helps those who are looking to dispose of electronics like computers, telephones, TVs and VCRs, and other small electronics and household appliances. You can bring up to 2 units per day, per household, for recycling at any store in the US. It used to be an Earth Day only event but after last year, they expanded.
Many cities and counties in the Detroit metro area also offer a waste disposal program for safely disposing of e-waste and unwanted medications. Check the city and county you live in to see if they're hosting a program this year. City of Detroit is known for their program, as is Macomb County Health Department. If you're in the Royal Oak area, Socrra will help you dispose of your hazardous waste on Earth day and every day.
Remember, it's never a bad time to teach your kids the importance of making this world a better, cleaner place. Have a wonderful Earth Day!
