Earth Day 2010 Events in Lincoln, Nebraska

This year in Lincoln there is a sprawling array of activities planned to celebrate Earth Day 2010. Many of the Earth Week activities are free and family friendly. Whether one is looking to learn, volunteer, or just have fun, there is sure to be something to interest everyone who wants to join in the Earth Day 2010 celebration.

Educational Activities

Free Films
On March 31, film goers can explore views of the relationship between the planet and human beings at a free premiere screening of "The Sacred Planet." The film starts at 7:00 p.m at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. For details, contact the Ross Theater or visit the event listing at the Ross website.

Wednesday, April 21, the educational movie, "Dirt," will be shown in the Hardin Hall Auditorium on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus. The screening starts at 7:00 p.m. See the Earth Day Events listing at the Lincoln Earth Day website for additional information.

Free Lectures
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is also offering free lectures on Thursday, April 22, covering several environmental issues. The first presentation, "Sustainable Development, Holism, and Mainstream Economic Theory," starts at 10:00 a.m. in the UNL City Campus Union. Drop-in Earth Week Program
Starting Monday, April 19, Pioneers Park will host an Earth Week program. Each day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. there will be a different emphasis. Featured topics and activities are to include:
• green building tours
• gardening
• planting trees
• recycling, and
• birds banding and feeding.

Service Projects

Saturday, April 17 is the "Global Day of Service", and there are several opportunities for volunteers to come and make a difference locally. There will be:
• a clean-up of the stream at Antelope Park
recycling at Memorial Stadium before and after the Spring Game, and
• tree planting at the Lincoln Children's Zoo.

Those interested in participating in these service opportunities can register online at the Lincoln Earth Day website.

On April 24, there will be a "Keep Wilderness Park Beautiful" service project starting at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers who pre-register before April 21 will be given free pizza and pop. Contact the Pioneers Park Nature Center at (402) 441-7895 for more information.

Earth Day 40th Anniversary Celebrations

At 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 24th, the Earth Day Run will start at the MoPac Trail Head in Lincoln. Cost to participate in the run is $10 per adult and $5 per child. The registration deadline is April 12th, 2010. For more details and to register, go to http://www.lincolnearthday.org/5K.asp.

On Saturday, April 24th, Antelope Park will hold a celebration event starting at 2 p.m., which will feature exhibits, entertainment, and a keynote speech. At 5:30 p.m., there will be a post celebration bike ride to the Haymarket. Riders can sign up at http://lincolnearthday.org/bikeride.asp.
