Earth Day 2010 Poem

The Best Mother

Allana Calhoun
Oops! I missed the Earth Day 2010 submission by a matter of hours. Ah well, here is my poem anyway!

How do you choose who is the best mother?

I think I know of one, and you also know her

She watches us grow and flourish like billions of little seeds

Like any loving parent she provides us with all our needs

We, the typical children, take all that she hands out

When we don't get what we want, we weep, swear and pout

No matter what we do, she dotes on us with loving care

Even as we break her heart, she stands forever there

With gentle arms she protects us in her embrace

And yet we continue to push away and spit in her face

What small price does a mother ask of her children?

To be taken care of as she grows old and trodden

Can we not provide her with a little reciprocal love and care?

Are we not able to join forces for the mother we share?

A little bit of thanks goes such a long way

The trick is giving it often and not just on one day.
